Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) form the backbone of any enterprise that handles funds, stock inventory, scientific data, and content for online libraries and web sites. This facilitates the efficient storage of extensive electronic data, secure access to that data, and numerous indexing and sorting technologies for data retrieval. Most systems also incorporate sophisticated data transformation tools to validate and reshape data according to business rules.
More recently, RDBMS packages have added ‘fail safe’ redundancy systems and data synchronisation and replication across different, and possibly separately located, servers. Furthermore, there has been increasing interest in the ability to audit data access and trace data change lineage.
