Overview:

This course is aimed at those who wish to obtain a solid grounding in website design, creation, publishing and optimisation. During the course you will design your own website, thoroughly cover important areas such as optimisation, HTML coding, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) server side scripting. You will use leading edge website development tools such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks and after first learning how to write HTML code in nothing more than Notepad. You will also learn Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques while designing your website, before uploading your site LIVE to the to web server using various File Transfer Protocol (FTP) tools. Let’s not “Pay-Per-Click”, Adwords, and website performance analysis such as Google Analytics is also discussed.

Learning Method:

The course will be presented in lecture/tutorial sessions using a combination of lectures and practical exercises. Each student will be provided with course notes, will have access to authoring tools, the Internet, and will have access to a live Internet Server. Throughout the course you will progressively build a hypothetical prototype website with the skills you have gained. At the end of the course your end product will be presented to the class to demonstrate you have the necessary knowledge and skill.

If you wish to obtain the skills necessary for website design, development and ongoing management, then this course is highly recommended. All you need is a basic understanding of the web, Microsoft Windows, and a desire to increase your knowledge and skills in website design and development.

Pre-requisites:

Before attending this course you should be comfortable with the use of a Microsoft Windows computer, and be familiar with creating, moving, renaming and deleting files.

The objective of this course is to help participants gain greater knowledge and experience in the design and development aspects of creating and managing a website. It’s aimed at students who wish to take on the role of managing a website, or are looking to take a position where they have responsibility of a website or intranet.

Course Content:

Module 1:
  • Digital Photography - We turn poor quality photos into works of art for our website.
  • Web Design Principles Part One
  • Introduction to Fireworks
  • Using Fireworks - We create Animated Gifs backgrounds, text and set transparency. When do I use a Gif or a JPEG?
  • Introduction to HTML Part ONE - You are travelling overseas, don’t have access to Dreamweaver but need to make an urgent update to your website - What can you do?
  • Using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) - Linking internally, externally or embedding style information within the code, you have many time saving options when it comes to CSS.
Module 2:
  • Linking to other pages within our website by using graphical buttons and text links.
  • HTML Part TWO. Tables, Nested tables, SPAN, DIV, URLS - Absolute & Relative Introduction to Dreamweaver
  • Graphical navigational BUTTONS with ROLLOVER behaviour
  • Modifying Page Table layout, importing navigational buttons
Module 3:
  • Web Design Principles Part Two
  • Introduction to Macromedia Flash - We create a cool slideshow with pre-loader and button with sound effects.
  • Internet delivery, connectivity and technology - How best to use PDF’s!
  • Advanced navigation fly-out menu system - We show you how Dreamweaver and Fireworks can create a comprehensive menu system in a matter of minutes.
Module 4:
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - Get the edge on your competitor’s websites and aim for a Top 10 ranking!
  • Server-side Programming - FORM data submission with email retrieval. How to create a personalised automated "Thank You" email after FORM submission.
  • Error checking for forms using Javascript and other technologies
  • HTML Emails with Microsoft Outlook. Sick and tired of boring old TEXT emails? - Lets promote your new website using graphics and colour in an email.
  • Web Design Principles Part Three
Module 5:
  • Web Design Principles Part Four
  • Creating your own RSS feed with XML - Keep your website users up to date by automatically informing them of website updates.
  • Web Design Principles Part Five
  • Overview of “Pay-Per-Click” online advertising through Google Adwords.
  • Working with Google Analytics to monitor website performance.
