Professional Year - Monash Professional takes the lead

Fully owned by Monash University, one of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight leading universities and ranked in the top 50 universities in the world*, Monash Professional is a provider of quality training and development programs (short courses) and industry placements (internships). Programs are designed to cater for groups or individuals at various stages of their career development.

Monash Professional has now taken the lead in delivering a new program - the Professional Year. Designed under Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) guidelines, this is the first Professional Year program for Skilled Migration available in Australia. This new initiative aims to provide a quality workplace related experience to enhance the participant’s career and employment skills through relevant practical training, and provide a bridge from university into permanent employment in Australia.

The Professional Year is principally for international students seeking to gain permanent residence (participants are expected to be holders of, or those waiting for approval of a 485 Skilled Graduate visa), however, the program is available to all students. It is a part time 12 month program covering a minimum of 44 weeks (with breaks) which includes a 12 week internship component within a host company. Participants will experience practical hands-on learning with an emphasis on workplace preparation – culture, work place ethics and expectations. The program is designed for international students who have graduated from undergraduate or post graduate degrees within the last 6 months in Australia, through a course with two years of credit points over a minimum of 16 months.

The Professional Year in Computer Science (regulated by the Australian Computing Society) is scheduled to be offered by Monash Professional from mid May 2008 in Melbourne, and in Sydney later in 2008. Additional programs in the disciplines of Accounting and Engineering are also being planned with professional bodies.

The Professional Year in Computer Science will consist of four modules:

    • Business & Professional Communications
    • Australian Workplace Culture
    • Professional Internship
    • Professional Element (to be offered in conjunction with the Australian Computing Society).

On successful completion of the program, permanent residency (PR) applicants will have gained points towards migration. Note, the Professional Year program does not guarantee permanent residency. Further information on a 485 Skilled Migration visa can be found on the DIAC website (http://www.immi.gov.au/).

Enrolments are now being taken for the Professional Year in Computer Science along with enquiries about developments in the Accounting and Engineering Professional Year programs.
