Monash Professional will accept applications from students and recent graduates intent on gaining practical experience in the Australian work-place. Each applicant is assessed to ensure they meet the requirements with regard to relevant studies, visa status and English language levels. Please speak to Monash Professional for further information on eligibility.
What industries can I do an internship in?
Monash Professional works with over 2000 companies across all industries and professional fields. Upon receiving an application, we will tailor an industry specific internship of your choice.
Can I receive academic credit for my internship?
Our programs are designed to satisfy your university requirements. Just advise us of your specific requirements when you apply and we take care of the rest.
What kind of companies do you work with?
We work with a broad range of companies from boutique firms to those with a strong international base. We also partner with government departments, research institutes, international and non-government organisations (NGO). Monash Professional carefully selects host companies to ensure they meet the quality standards demanded by Monash.
What kind of work experience can I expect to do?
As all of our internships are tailored to suit each applicant, you can expect to be involved in tasks and projects that relate specifically to your industry. Your internship will be designed to enhance your knowledge in your specific field. The degree of responsibility and the level of specialisation in your role will be based on your knowledge, skills and academic achievements. You will normally be involved in a range of activities including work shadowing; team tasks; supervised tasks, independent tasks and in-house training.
How long should I do my internship for and what hours?
An internship can be undertaken for any period from four weeks up to a year (depending on your visa). Your hours can be part time or full time. We will structure your schedule so that you can fit your internship around studies.
Will I have a contact person throughout my internship?
Yes. You will be assigned a supervisor at your work place and Monash Professional will provide you with a specialist staff member who is available at anytime for assistance and support. We visit all of our interns and make regular contact with you and your work supervisor throughout the placement.
Which visa should I undertake my internship on?
Various countries have different visa agreements with Australia. Monash Professional can provide you with information on the visa you require. As a Monash Professional intern, you have the opportunity to apply for a special program visa entitling you to do an internship here for up to a year. As an industry leader, Monash Professional is approved by the immigration department to endorse your application for such a visa.
What language requirements are needed for a successful internship placement?
English language proficiency is necessary if you are to gain the maximum benefit from your internship. Good communication skills will increase your opportunities to take on more complex tasks and enable you to utilise knowledge in your chosen field. Prior to your internship we will work with you to determine your workplace readiness in relation to language needs and recommend the type of program you may need. In some instances we have found that interns only require a program covering an introduction to industry specific terminology and workplace culture whereas for others it has been necessary to undertake General English prior to the commencement of the internship. Monash Professional has the capacity to arrange short or long term language programs that will cater for your specific needs.
Can I get any other assistance in preparation for my internship?
Yes. We conduct a Preparation for the Workplace Course. This runs for one week and is specifically designed to prepare students for their internship. The course covers topics such as e-mail and telephone etiquette, memo writing and general education on day-to-day practices in the Australian workplace and occupational health and safety.
What will happen if I don’t like my internship?
Monash Professional’s years of experience and industry contacts are used to match the individual to the internship. Our aim is for participants to gain the most relevant experience they can. If for some reason you are unhappy with your internship, please advise your Monash Professional contact. We maintain excellent relationships with each of our host companies which enables us to negotiate on an intern’s behalf. Our staff will intervene to determine what the problem is and work out a suitable solution. If the issue cannot be resolved, we will organise an alternative placement as soon as possible.
How long does it take to organise the internship?
Monash Professional aims to have a suitable internship confirmed for you within eight weeks of your application. At that point you will receive a full profile of your host company and a detailed outline of your training there.
